Esophageal Stent

An esophageal stent is a tubular medical device implanted via endoscopy or interventional surgery. It is primarily used to alleviate swallowing difficulties and obstructions caused by esophageal stenosis, esophageal cancer, or esophageal fistula. By mechanically supporting and expanding the esophagus, it helps patients regain their ability to eat and improve their quality of life. It is a palliative treatment method.

Indications for esophageal stent

1. Malignant diseases: When advanced esophageal cancer, cardiac cancer, or mediastinal tumors compress the esophagus, causing severe obstruction and making surgery impossible, a stent can quickly open the esophagus.

2. Benign stenosis: used when chemical burns, post-radiotherapy scarring, or postoperative anastomotic stenosis fail to respond to multiple balloon dilations.

3. Esophageal fistula: For patients with esophageal-tracheal fistula or esophageal-mediastinal fistula, covered stents can seal the fistula opening to prevent infection.
